    There is no easy way to calculate the calories used by walking, but you can get a minimum figure for stairs. Suppose that half the time (15 minutes) is spent climbing the stairs. Determine how many steps you actually climb during this time and convert to height, multiply by your weight and by the force of gravity, and you have determined the work done. If this is in joules (you used metric measurements), convert to Calories by dividing by 4184. This is an underestimate, as it actually requires some energy to go down the stairs as well as up.
