Is lifting heavier weights with fewer reps for bodybuilding or gaining muscle mass?
I lift one set that is heavy and do 10-15 reps, and then do a heavier set of 1-6 reps. Is that good for gaining muscle?

Absolutely….
What you want to is, lift the amount of weight that you can only lift 6-8 times. This will cause micro tears and braking of muscle fibers. Here’s where many people go wrong… only work a muscle group one every 5-7 days, NO LESS.
During that 5-7 days, your body is rebuilding the damage that the lifting session caused. This rebuilding will repair the muscles to be abit larger and stronger to protect them for the future. This is how they get larger.
Do all your lifts in slow motion… this will tear all the muscles fibers evenly for the full motion of the lift.
You might want to consider lifting twice per week… working different muscle groups each session.
Good Luck

the bit about giving your muscles 5-7 days to recover isn’t always the case. I’ve lifted for over 6 years now. I started at 140lbs. and could only bench press 120lbs. free weight. I am now 210lbs. and can bench press 320lbs free weight. I lift 3 times a week, sometimes more…sometimes less. I’ve lifted using the same routine two days in a row. The body can rebuild muscle in a short period of time. You just can’t lift more than you can handle. You need to work your way up. the program you are doing is the way I did it. it will work. keep it up. good luck.
