I need some vegetarian diet foods – what could I eat and lose weight?

I have been vegetarian for about 9 months now. Whilst I have lost a small amount of weight (7-8 pounds) since making the switch, I think I eat too much bread and pasta to lose much more. What sort of things should I eat that will help me lose weight? I don’t have a whole lot of time/money/skill for cooking elaborate meals.

Now, bread and pasta contains a large amount of carbohydrates, which could explain your slow weight loss. You need to decrease the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, but the source of your carb intake should be from bread and pasta. If you are to lose weight successfully, you need to drink plenty of water, keep active by walking or jogging, and importantly, increase the fibre in your diet.

It is not what can I eat to loose weight, it is about what you should not eat.

You seem to understand this, in the way you worded your question. It is just a matter of reducing the starchy foods and eat more green veg etc.

    More will power

I’m a vegan trying to lose weight too. I think we should go light on the breads and grains and nuts and high fat foods like avacados. I am trying this thing where I let my body cleanse it self when I’m at work – like a mini fast. And then eat a meal with alot of veggies for dinner. I read it is really good to let your body clean it self up on the inside by not eating until your very hungry. Because if you eat breakfast and then go into eating lunch and you are not really hungry – the body is still working on cleaning up from breakfast and it might not be done yet. What happens is the body sees lunch coming and shoves breakfast into fat storage – thinking we will get back to cleaning that up later. But then the body never does because it is busy with lunch and then dinner comes – and the body throws lunch into fat storage.

Ok this is really simplistic language – but that is how fat gets stored. So, we have to give the body a break. I find it easiest to drink water from breakfast to lunch and then eat dinner at home. I only do it on the days I work and I don’t do it every day. Because some days I am hungrier than others. YOu just have to listen to your body.

More organic fruits and veggies, nuts, legumes, tofu……you can’t cut fiber entirely out of your diet as that’s not good for you so just reduce the amount you are eating and make sure it’s whole grains and not refined whites that goes for the pasta. Me: vegetarian Keep up the good work!

Being a vegetarian is good. But I don’t think there is a thing called “vegetarian diet foods.” All vegetables are good for the body when eaten in moderation. You can eat almost anything and still lose weight for as long as you lessen the amount of food you eat like the calories, the quantity, and the sweets.

You should also consider the nutritional value of the foods you eat; it should be balance.

Unfortunately you will need to cook a bit to get the benefit of healthy vegetarian food as without it its hard to get a filling meal. Skill and money you needn’t worry about as its not hard to make meals for little if you have the recipes.

First of all Soup — Wonderful creation shove in any kind of veg to a slightly oiled pan to soften add stock then leave on stove while you get on with other things. you can change consistency by adding more water or letting it steam away by leaving lid off.You can freeze a big batch for ages too and its packed with veg so is good. Also can put lentils in to get benefits of pulses.

    Heuvos Revueltos

    1tbsp olive oil
    1/4 onion finely chopped
    1 green chili sliced
    1 tbsp cold water
    6 eggs well beaten
    seasoning

Heat oil in frying pan add onion chili seasoning cook for 3 mins tossing carefully. Add water to eggs and pour over stir occasionally.

    Ratatouille

    Olive oil
    4 garlic cloves finely chopped
250g aubergines cut into 2 cm cubes
    250g courgettes sliced 1cm thick
    250g onions
    250g tomatoes
    basil leaves
    seasoning

Aubergine in pan with olive oil garlic . Put this to one side. Cook courgettes until tender turn up heat to brown add tomatoes then onions. Put all together and toss

These are easy and cheap I’m a student on a budget so need cheap meals and cant be bothered standing in kitchen for hours so are reasonably quick meals too. Dont be afraid to experiment try and get away from dairy and instead of bread have rivita or something.

My mother is a vegetarian. She hardly eats any bread/pasta.

She constantly is finding new ways to cook vegetables. Eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans will give you a great amount of the vitamins and minerals that you need for the day. Remember to take a multi vitamin to help you in any areas that you may be lacking.

A typical day for my mom is something like…
Breakfast :Coffee and some kind of cereal or oatmeal
(Sometimes toast but its always whole wheat bread)

Lunch is usuually something small like yogurt. Sometimes she’ll cook vegetables and eat those (String beans and salad dressing – string bean salad is a good example of something she eats often)..or a BIG salad. She puts all kinds of vegetables into her salad. Lettus, baby spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions are her typical salad. With extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar.

Dinner could sometimes also be a salad. Or pasta! Theres no harm in eating pasta as long as your not eating too much pasta. I’d only cook pasta two or three times a week (not even). Sometimes she stir fries vevetables and puts them over rice (More veggies than rice of course. For example if she cookes 1 cup of vegetables she’ll use 1/2 or less cup of rice).. TOFU. It’s a soy product and soy is wonderful for us (Granted you dont have soy allergies).. Sometimes she stirfries vegetables with tofu.

If you go to a super market and go to the frozen section, you’ll see that in bags they have vegetables specifically made for stir frying. It’ll say “Stir fry vegetables” on it or something. Those vegetables also come with sauce that you can put in the pan while stir frying (Some sourt of soy or teriaki sauce) ..

For snacks you could try some fruit. Sometimes in my house we freeze blueberries (espically in the summer) and snack on those. Or grapes… almonds are a great snack (A handful of almonds per day is supposed to be very beneficial)

    Good luck!

I lost 65 lbs and kept it off over a year by increasing fiber and exercising three times a week with lots of aerobics. Watch the vitamins! Vegans are at risk for B-12 deficiency due to lack of meat in diet. Nothing wrong with being vegan, just take a supplement.

Great fiber product that helped me..

    1.) Greens and Lettuces
    2.) Asparagus–I love this stuff!
    3.) Zucchini
Zucchini is another low calorie, low carb vegetable. Actually, it is a squash. Zucchini is a great addition to salads, stir-fried dishes, or Sautéed alone or with other vegetables.
4.) Tomatoes–You could have a lite tomato sandwich w/low-fat mayo. Simple yet tasty!
    5.) Berries
A great way to satisfy your sweet tooth is with berries. Berries are high in vitamins and anti-oxidants so they make a great dessert or nice addition to salads.
Also, us vegetarians need our protein! Try these foods so you’ll get your protein for the day:
Grains plus legumes. Try black beans and rice.
Nuts and seeds plus legumes. Lentil soup with a serving of almonds on the side.
Corn plus legumes. Try pinto beans in a corn tortilla.
There are lots of possible combinations.
    Try:
–Whole grain pasta tossed with peas, almonds, and your favorite sauce.
–Whole wheat toast with peanut butter will give you a complete protein.
–Bean soup with whole grain crackers.
–Corn tortillas with refried beans and rice.
