How can i stop my parents from smoking?

Everyday they smoke and everytime they do, i tell them to quit. But they just ignore me or push me aside and say something along the lines of ‘dont worry, just leave me alone and i’ll quit’ BUT THEY SAID THAT YEARS AGO!

They cant stop smoking and after tons of learning about cigarettes in health class, im always scared! Im not the type of person to tell my parents that i cry at night about it (i dont) and stuff.

Thier too addicted, it kills thier lungs and thier wallets.

How can i stop them? One time i tried telling them to stop smoking but they just yell at me and send me to my room or something. Its bugging me ALOT.
They usually go out for a smoke whenever they can (commercial breaks) but they have a habit of ging after they eat.

My parents started smoking when they were really young (14 etc) and now thier 30 ish.
but… its hurting me so bad… i cant stand it

hmmm… well, I suggest showing them what smoking really does to you over the years. Also, maybe tell them to join one of those smokers anonymous things to quit, or maybe say pretend to start smoking one day (put a cigar in your mouth), and tell them either you’ll start doing it since your parents do it, or you are doing it because your parents are doing it. Any of that help?

well sadistwitch and Autumn, I don’t agree with you. Do you know how bad smoking is for you?

You can’t. But maybe you could politely ask them not to smoke in front of you, or to smoke outside. You can make a choice for yourself not to smoke, but you cant’ make this choice for anyone else. You are not allowed to tell them what to do, but you are allowed to ask for respect.

I am a mom, and I smoke, and i like my cigarettes. My 12 year old daughter wants me to quit, and she nags me about it. But that does not mean i am going to quit. But I am careful not to do it right in her face because I know it bothers her.

IF YOU LISTEN TO ALEX, YOU’RE JUST GOING TO GET IN MORE TROUBLE.

You can’t stop them. They are their own people. Stop trying to control them. People make their own decisions in life. If they quit for you they are quitting for the wrong reason and will likely start up again. Try respecting your parents. Disrespecting your parents is a worse habit than smoking. Be a good example to them and remain a non-smoker, that is the best thing you can do. Being a whiny little b.i.t.c.h. won’t influence them to want to do what you ask, it will influence them to be irritated! They are going to continue to yell at you and send you to your room if you don’t stop. Your best bet is to refuse to be around them when they smoke, respect them, refuse to participate in things that involve smoking, such as going with them to the liquor store to buy cigarettes.. But most of all, stop disrespecting your parents, or they will never respect you or what you have to say. Just cause they’re mom and dad and just cause they’re smokers doesn’t mean they’re not people too.. they just disagree with something you have to say.. and this isnt the last time its going to happen, they are going to disagree with you a million other times in life. i advise learning to control your actions NOW!

you really can’t do much because wether it’s smoking, drinking, drugs or anything addicting they have to want to stop it is like AA you can’t help an alcholic unless the alcholic want’s to help them self but i think it is wonderful that you love your parents and care for them, but your parents don’t think they have a problem you know they do and so don’t i but you cant help someone until they want to help themselves

You have my sympathy. I started smoking at 14 to be cool. No warnings in those days. I stopped smoking 46 years later on my doctors advice. Now smoke free for over 4 years and I have developed COPD. I have to use an inhaler 3 times a day. I am now paying for smoking all those years. Wish I never smoked or had quit earlier. Now I can’t stand the smell of second hand smoke and hate to be around other smokers. Now a days people look stupid smoking cig’s and cigars. Smoking is being banned everywhere these days and that is good. They should outlaw tobacco….period. If your parents won’t stop then ask them if they are keeping up the monthly payments on their life insurance. Good luck.

I don’t think you can stop them from smoking because they are used to smoke already… but you can choose between smoke or not smoke by yourself (your parents chose to smoke, so let them smoke; but you still have your own choice, so make your own decision wisely)…

the sad thing is that u can’t do much about it since it’s their opinion because they got to addicted to it. my mom smokes and it drives me crazy and i tell her to stop every time, but she smokes one cigarette a day which doesn’t do almost anything, but still. my dad quit and it took him three times to fully quit. he only smokes cigars now and only once in a blue moon. my grandma quit smoking after her husband died of lung cancer, so it mainly depends on them really…unfortunately there isn’t much that we can do 🙁 ….but never stop telling them and keep protesting 🙂
