does weight lifting help you lose fat faster than cardio?

I am almost 30, and having a lot of trouble with my leg joints. I can basically do no cardio, except swimming, which isn’t always available. Somebody told me that lifting weights can actually help you lose fat as fast as cardio will. Is this true?

Usually I would say stick to cardio, but in your case it looks like that isn’t much of an option. Stick with lower weights and do more reps, making sure each rep is performed slowly. That way you tone the muscles rather than bulking up. Muscle is basically what burns fat, so toning it up will help.

You may notice that your weight stays the same for a while or that you actually start to gain weight – this is totally normal. Initially you are going to build muscle regardless, which weighs more than fat.

Stick to swimming whenever possible, or look at other options. Have you tried an eliptical trainer? Some exercise devices like the exercise balls and resistance bands are available at http://www.activeforever.com – both are very effective for toning. I hope this helps you out. Good luck with the new exercise program.

No, lifting weight builds muscle, and muscle can HELP burn fat, but cardio is the most efficient way to lose fat. Honestly you don’t have to do anything strenous at all – merely walking at a decent pace will get the job done, since low intensity exercise uses up fat fuel before it starts to use up glucose (sugar) in your body. Could you walk on a treadmill or around the block for 30-40 minutes?

yes and no While your building muscle you should be eating more calories then u exert so you shouldn’t lose right away however when are satisfied with the size of your muscles and go to sustain, than for each 1lb of muscle u add you burn an additional 35-50 calories a day. So if you gain 10lbs of muscle, Everyday you will burn 350-500 calories les call it 425 a day 425 calories is like jogging almost 4 miles.
