It’s not compulsary but certainly advisable when travelling abroad.
Your first stop should be to get an EHIC card which entitles you to free (or reembursed) emergency health coverage within the EU countries.
However this will not cover all scenarios e.g. repatriation in an emegency to the UK, and it is recommended to have both
