The printer will talk to the router and then from the router to your laptop.
You need to set up the printer so it finds the router. It will be in the printer manual how to do it.
You also need to make sure the router is set up with the right parameters so the printer can talk to it.
There should be a way to know if the printer has found the router.

You need the printer to be connected to your desktop. You also need the desktop to be connected via Ethernet cable to the router. Then you create a workgroup and share the printer over the network. Then you can print something off your laptop when you are not near it (an ad-hoc wireless printer).
