Would waking up in middle of night to eat small healthy snack increase weight loss?

I have a theory but need your opinion on its practice. Eating jump starts metabolism and makes you burn calories faster. I wake every night at 3am to go to the bathroom. If I were to eat a small healthy snack (almond, dried fruit) would this increase the number of calories I burn, and therefore increase weight loss?

No, your body doesn’t burn fat when you’re asleep. You’ll gain more.

Sort of, if you ate a small amount of carbs every 4 hours it would boost your metabolism but you have to be strict about the amount you eat. Eating during the night may get into a habit and you could end up eating more. It is a fallacy about not eating at night, energy is stored in the body until it is used no matter what time of day it is.

I would also take into account that eating in the middle of the night and then lying down may give you bad indigestion.

This would have little to no affect on your body. The best thing to do is to try eating that snack at breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast is proven to boost your metabolism for the day. Also, don’t eat before bed. If you do those calories will be stored and not burned off while you sleep. Hope this helps.

Hi Catherine, if that snack is over and above your usual calories then it will actually contribute to weight gain, if it is part of your usual diet then eat at a more convenient time of the day. Quality sleep is much more important for your body, don’t mess with it, go potty then head back to bed and eat in the morning.

This eating many small meals has almost no discernable impact on metabolism. Whether you eat 3 x 600 calorie meals or 6 x 300 calorie meals you still eat 1800 calories. There can be some other benefits for some people to eat more or less meals. Simply choose what suits your diet and lifestyle best and you will give yourself the best chance you have to achieve your goals.

There are a lot of misconceptions and close to down right lies when it comes to losing weight and this qualifies in that range.
