Why pay a private health insurer whose main goal is to make a profit ?

Surely we are all better off paying the equivalent amount to the government with the only goal of providing free health care to all? Private insurance is a profit making industry whose primary aim is to make a lot of money, not to provide health care. This encourages the insurance companies to cover the healthy and avoid those who really need the health care. Why would anyone prefer to pay private companies to grow fat on profits rather than contribute towards the provision of quality health care for all?
So why not support Obama’s efforts to make a move in the direction of government funded health care.

If it was possible to have 100% coverage paid by our taxes (even if it makes our taxes increase) then I am all for it, but as of right now there is no option so what is the purpose of the question if the choice is not there?
