Are you talking about ancient Greece or modern Greece ?
The herb sylphium was very well known in ancient times, and its action is still understood today, but the plant itself is now extinct. It was used for contraception and to bring about abortions. It died out because it was over-harvested, and nobody ever managed to transplant it from its natural origins in order to farm it.
It is so well known to have worked that if any noblewoman of ancient Rome or Ancient Greece produced a baby for a man who was not her husband, she was considered to have done so deliberately

Go to “pubmed” then put the scientific name of herbs you have in mind into the search feature, and you will find all the peer reviewed literature that has been written on that herb

many are concentrated and turned into medicines containing the active ingredient. Hence doctors know their botany. They’re studying them more and more to find out why they work and what the phytochemicals actually are and which ones are the active ingredients. Where is the evidence? at a chemist/pharmacist. Alexander the Great died overdosing (against his doctor’s wishes) on a herb to cure a cold. I forget which one but it starts with H. He really wanted to go and start his campaign to conquer the rest of Persia and couldn’t wait a few days to get better. Asprin is a classic medicine borne of herbs. It comes from a lot of herbs, like henbane, and the active phytochemical is synthesised to turn it into asprin. Hence if you’re allergic to asprin you have to be careful about what pain-killing herbs you use.
