What is the best medicine for someone bipolar?

I’m 31, over weight and bipolar. What would be the best medicine? How much would it cost? I take Zoloft now.

I all depends on you- you may have to try a few. Not all people respond the same to all medications. I would recomend Lithium. But that one, you have to have a blood test every month to make sure your “levels ” like sodim and such, are right in your body. Also, talk to your doctor about what he/she would recommend, they know your medical history and other problems you may have that may impact what medicine may be good for you. Good Luck.

    Look on http://www.scientology.org
Search for PTS. They’ll have an answer.

This matter should be discussed with your doctor. He will try you on a few different meds to suit your particular concerns. If you are not happy with Zoloft tell him and of your weight concerns…he may add a med to help you with that or it may be counterproductive. Your primary concern should be your bipolar disorder. Half of America is overweight so you are not alone in that department. Best of luck.

See bipolar disorder at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 2 (read the whole page & intro). Avoid Scientology like the plague that it is! (Dianetics too).

My boyfriend is bipolar and his hand permanently shakes all the time from the side effect of lithium. He will have this for the rest of his life.

I take Zoloft and Wellbutrin with no side effects. I have a lot of energy on Wellbutrin. Of course everyone reacts differently, but you have to experiment with these various medications and switch if there are bad side effects. Eventually, you will find a medication that suites you fine. Good Luck!

The “best” medication is education. Anyone familiar with bipolar disorder knows no two people are on the same “cocktail” we all experience similar symptoms yet can react differently to medications and the dosages.

Take action by being your best advocate. Know all your options, pay attention to your actual symptoms and individual life style. Go to your doctor prepared with an arsenal of information.

1st: It’s important to chart your moods, what you eat, when you take your medications, if anything influenced you during each day, your sleeping patterns, exercise etc. You’d be surprised how much of your day you go about doing things subconsciously.

Making medication adjustments without knowing your basic daily information is a waste of time. How can you see what is really needed if you don’t have charts to track the changes?

2nd: Research the medications you are thinking about and then ask your doctor what their perspective is on changing or adding a brand. All medications have some possibility of side affects (even baby aspirin) I suggest making choices by the long term symptom relief.

Always remember the internet has a lot good and bad information, use judgment when considering your decision.

3rd: Keep in mind doctors have their way of practicing, one isn’t necessary better than an other. Your goal is to work with a professional who resonates with your style of reaching a balanced life.

I prefer doctors who I know listen to me and my individual concerns and don’t just lump me into a category by my diagnosis.

Finally be prepared to make future adjustments as your needs will evolve. Outside influences, hormonal aspects, natural growth and life style will all play a role. Manage your symptoms proactively by staying educated on your illness.

Don’t be just a statistic of the illness become an inspiration reach out to others when they ask questions, share your experiences, the struggles and successes with communication comes education.

    ~B Well~ Marcy
