What is dementia ?

Dementia is not considered a disease, but a symptom of mentally degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or strokes. Dementia is defined as an irreversible breakdown of all thinking skills, which normally keeps people sociable and sane. When a person is suffering from dementia, they can still be able to hear, see and feel, but are not able to interpret the sensory information logically. As such, they say nonsensical responses or even experience permanent memory loss.

Although dementia is usually associated with the natural aging process, not every elderly would develop this condition. Some patients who develop Alzheimer’s disease suffer from cognitive failure, which leads to full-blown dementia. Patients with dementia often experience personality breakdown, removing all their social abilities.

Dementia can be diagnosed after several psychological tests that measure cognitive functions and determining signs of drug interactions or previous health conditions like strokes. Dementia primarily affects a patient’s memory and ability to decide by himself or herself, and then changes to his or her personality and language problems follow. Advanced stages of dementia are characterized by complete loss of time.

Delirium is a condition with similar symptoms as dementia, so doctors usually try to rule out delirium during diagnosis. A person develops delirium when he or she suffered from invasive surgery, sleep deprivation, social isolation and extended hospital stays. Delirium is curable through counseling, drug regimens and brain stimulation. However, the effects of dementia are irreversible, but experts are trying to find a cure or a way to slow down its progression.
