What is an eye lift ?

Eyelift, technically known as blepharoplasty, is a type of surgical procedure that involves the correction of sagging upper eyelids by removing bags underneath the eyes. Since an eyelift is a cosmetic surgery, it is performed by a plastic surgeon.

Eyelift surgery, which can take from one to three hours, is done by removing fat, excess skin and unwanted muscles from the lower and upper eyelids. Patients are  given local anesthesia to numb the areas around the eyes, while others are given general anesthesia. Because of this, patients would not feel any pain throughout the surgery, since those with local anesthesia would be completely relaxed, while those with general anesthesia would be asleep.

Depending on the needed “lift”, plastic surgeons usually start on the upper lids before working on the lower lids. Incisions done by the surgeon usually follow the natural lines of the patient’s eyelids. Depending on the work needed, the surgeon separates the skin from the muscles and may trim excess skin or muscles. For patients who want to remove eye bags, the surgeon may perform a type of eyelift called ‘transconjunctival blepharoplasty’.

After the procedure, the eyes are lubricated and covered with a bandage. When the anesthesia starts to wear off, patients may feel their eyes sore, but surgeons usually provide medication, such as eye drops or antibiotics, to alleviate pains and other discomfort. Stitches from the eyelift may be removed within 5 to 10 days after surgery.

Be aware that wearing contact lenses are not recommended until two weeks after surgery. Ask your doctor for recommendations on the best time to wear contact lenses again as wearing them again may cause discomfort.

Successful eyelift surgeries can enhance a person’s appearance and make him or her look younger. Most people combine eyelift surgery with other facial cosmetic surgeries like facelift, nose job or lip enhancements. Unlike other types of plastic surgeries, the results of an eyelift are permanent.
