What causes glaucoma ?

Glaucoma is an umbrella term for some eye diseases that may eventually lead to blindness. Glaucoma has very few symptoms and few warning signs. Loss of peripheral vision is the first sign of glaucoma. There are two main types of glaucoma, although there are quite a few categories of the disease within every type. Cataracts and glaucoma are confused as the same disease; however, the two conditions it totally unrelated to each other.

Chronic POAG or primary open-angle glaucoma is the first type of glaucoma. The condition is caused by the eye canal being blocked and gives pressure to the eye due to lack of drainage. This form of glaucoma affects more than 3 million Americans and if diagnosed at early stage, the patients will respond well to the treatment process. If this condition is diagnosed a little too late, it may lead to gradual vision lost and is mostly untreatable.

Acute or angle closure glaucoma is the second major type of glaucoma. This condition is not as common as the POAG and differs in that the pressure forced in the eye develops in a much faster rate. This is characterized by the cornea and the iris of the eye not fully opening as they would normally do. Surgery is usually the treatment for this type of glaucoma, trimming the outer edges of the iris. Nausea, headaches and blurred vision are some of the symptoms of angle closure glaucoma.

Glaucoma is also a hereditary condition. Families with history of glaucoma may be more prone in acquiring the condition. Prevention is the main cure for developing glaucoma. Regular eye checkups and talks with an eye specialist can help find glaucoma at its early stage. Glaucoma has been the world’s main reason for blindness, with proper eye care; glaucoma-causing blindness can be prevented.
