Boil the water or use water sterilizing tablets – if you don’t, I dare say you will lose weight as a result of diarrhoea from catching some potentially dangerous stomach bug – they don’t warn against ‘Delhi Belly’ for nothing!

Would you like a completely serious answer?

Yes. There’s no faster way to lose weight than dysentery. Anything you eat will immediately come out one or both ends, along with large volumes of water. If being emaciated is sexy to you and worth nearly dying for this is a miracle diet. If you ask the locals, well, they’ll think Americans are crazy but they’ll probably show you the ideal rivers and streams for contracting it.

    EDIT:

Warning! While vegetables will be easy to get in India and as vegetarians they know what to do with them, do not put anything in your mouth that was not carefully washed with clean water or heated above the boiling point of water. This gets a lot of foreigners in trouble when they travel.

You drink the local water and you will be as sick as a dog, you might as well mix your pee and poo from home just to give you a taste of what it might be like. You want to loose weight out there just eat vegtables the heat will make you sweat anyway. Drink lots of bottled water and make sure you hear the seal snap on opening.
