Contrary to a lot of info that is out there today, calorie restriction is a necessary evil in weight loss. It does not really matter if you lower cals by limiting carbs, it is still calorie restriction. The good news is that there is really no food that is bad or good regarding weight loss. It is all about how much energy that’s contained in the food and how much energy you need to maintain your body weight. If your intake exceeds your need, you will gain weight, no matter what you eat. For example, there are many authors who deign to tell you what you should and should not eat, this rarely works, because for sustainable weight loss you must learn to manage the foods you like to eat within a calorie framework that allows you to lose weight.

As you may know, your body will adapt to a lower calorie diet by lowering its caloric requirement. A neat way around this is to simply not diet everyday. To do this, first you need to determine your caloric requirements, then subtract some number of calories from this number. For example, if you need 3000 calories per day to maintain your weight, you can lose a pound per week by simply eating 2100 calories on four days per week (dieting), while eating 3000 calories (i.e. not dieting) three days per week. Careful though, if you diet (eat 2100 cals) every day you will fall into the trap where your body resets its calorie needs due to what it perceives a starvation scenario.

There are any number of websites that will calculate your caloric need for you, I think parttimediet.com has a very nice one, as it takes into account your activity level. It also explains the above concept in more detail.

    Good Luck

I am 80 pounds overweight and my plan I am on they put me in the range to lose weight at 1200-1550 calories a day, 163-236 carbs, 32-56 fat, 60-127 protein. I would think that as I lose weight they will lower these numbers but for now that is what I am on.
