How many calories should a pregnant woman eat a day to remain healthy?

My sister suffers with anorexia and has just discovered that she became pregnant after losing her period for 6 months. She is very determined to increase her food intake so she does not risk damage to the baby. Of course this is extremely difficult for a person in her situation. So she is booked to see a psychiatrist soon.

But how many calories would she have to eat?
Would she have to continue increasing her intake throughout the pregnancy?

This would be a question for her doctor as it varies from person to person anyway without added conditions (as a safety until she sees her doc I would go over 2000)

2300 would be ideal for someone within a healthy BMI bracket, but if she is below that, her intake might have to be higher. On average a pregnant woman should gain 25-35lb during pregnancy, but again, if she starts under her BMI, she would need to add some pounds to that amount. Her doctor will be able to help her with all of that. Congrats to her!

Doctors recommend that pregnant women consume an extra 300 calories than the normal caloric intake (2,000). However, to prevent overeating and harming your sister’s system, I would make sure to check with a doctor first.

suprisingly anorexia doesnt affect the baby in any way tho its not good for either. but you dont have to change your eating habits, its not good to do a drastic change in diet, but she does need to start eating for herself as pregnancy will drain you and being anorexic does take alot from you period, so she needs the reccomended calorie intake plus 300 extra starting the 2nd trimester. but before 2nd trimester just the reccomended 1500-2000 calories and she will be just fine

A woman pregnant with one baby should increase her calorie intake by 300 calories a day. That’s assuming that she is currently taking in a healthy amount of calories. Make sure that she is taking a good prenatal vitamin every day!

I can’t help more than that, but I know that a really good nutritionist sure could!

    Good luck!

Your sister should also see an OBgyn to tell her how much she needs to gain to be healthy. Typical healthy weight gain is between 20 and 40 lbs.
It depends on her size but typically women need at least 1500 calories a day just to maintain weight and then you are suppose to increase that by 350 calories a day when you are pregnant. She should also definitely be taking a pregnancy vitamin with 800 mg of Folic Acid (Folate) in it to make sure that the baby is developing healthily.

Best of luck to you and her. She’ll be ok if she’s determined to get better for the baby.

My doctor told me besides eating a healthy diet of fruit, veggies and grains that you should only increase your caloric intake by the slight amount of what is in a snickers bar-which is about 350 calories. That doesn’t mean go and eat a snickers bar, just to intake an extra glass of milk and some extra fruit for those sweet tooths.

-Go to all scheduled doctor’s appointments. The doctor does not make them for his benefit–he wants to keep an eye on your health at all stages of your pregnancy. Go to each appointment with questions in hand for your doctor.

-Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is horrible for both you and your baby. Not drinking enough fluids could land you in the hospital.

-Consume more calories. Doctors believe a pregnant woman needs approximately 300 extra calories a day.

-Eat foods high in nutrients including proteins, carbohydrates, good fats, lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, low-fat dairy, vitamins and minerals.

-Take your prenatal vitamin daily. Extra folic acid is needed during pregnancy.

-Get plenty of sleep. This is not the time to be staying up until 2 a.m. and getting up at 6 a.m.

-Allow time for extra rest periods. Take more breaks and do not over-commit yourself.

-Exercise. If you already have a routine, keep it going. If you don’t, you may consider one now. Walking is a great way to exercise while pregnant.

-Eliminate or cut back on caffeine.

-Consume more fiber. Eat 20 to 30 grams a day to avoid constipation.

-Do not eat fish high in mercury, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish.
-Stay away from your cat’s litter box. Pregnant women are prone to catching toxioplasmosis from cat boxes. This is a serious disease that is harmful to your developing baby.

-Do not each raw meats, processed meats, unpasteurized drinks, or soft, unpasteurized cheeses.
