How do I make a new lockset fit in the old door openings?

I want to replace a 20 year old lockset with a new lockset but I can’t get the new lockset to fit & line up with the old door openings. I don’t want to replace the door. What should I do?

Cover over the existing hole with an aluminum plate.Get a 4″ x 4″ piece of 1/4″ plywood and drill a 2 1/8″ hole in the center with a holesaw. Then tack it with brads on the door exactly over the spot that you need the new hole.Drill into the door through your template.

I have several rental houses and a lot of the locks I’ve bought have been adjustable. If not, just change the knob using the existing piece from the old set. However, the metal plate is a good idea for security measures!!!
