How can you not lose muscle by eating very little?

I need to lose fat as fast as I can because health issues are arising by the minute. My doctor is telling me to go on a VLCD (very low calorie diet) because I’m obese. He also said that I might lose some muscle. Is there any way to prevent this?

Increase your physical activity level. It’ll help, but won’t prevent all muscle loss. Remember though since you’re significantly overweight your muscles have been built up to carry around your current weight, so when you lose weight you won’t actually need every bit of muscle that you have now.

You prevent this by eating sufficient protein. You determine what sufficient is by knowing how much lean body mass you have. Any doctor worth his beans would have done a body fat test on you to get this info. Even on a VLCD you can get in adequate protein.

Look into “Rapid Fat Loss Handbook” by Lyle McDonald. It is version of a vlcd called a psmf (Protein sparing modified fast) which is very successful for those that stick to it. He goes over very meticulously how to maintain your muscle on such a diet.

    good luck!

edit: i must add, another way we maintain our muscle during a diet is through lifting weights. Lyle talks about that as well. So, adequate protein intake PLUS weight lifting.
