People get misconceptions about this topic very often: that stomach crunches burn fat on your stomach, but it isn’t necessarily the case.
Doing abdominal toning and defining exercises are great for improving balance, strengthening your core, and provides protection against injury. However, that’s all abdominal toning exercises will do: tone. Many people think that if they work a certain body part enough aerobically, fat will be burned exclusively on the body part, but that’s not really how it works.
Here’s an example: when people walk to lose weight, you never expect them to lose weight just on their legs, usually the whole body thins over time. That’s because when you engage in low-impact, aerobic cardiovascular exercise, any fat on your body would have the potential to used as energy. It’s up to your body on what fat is used. So the same goes for belly fat, if you want to burn fat, engage in every low-impact, aerobic activity for at least 30 minutes everyday, and over time, that stubborn fat should go away.
I don’t want to discourage you from doing abdominal toning exercises, they do have their benefits. But cardiovascular exercise uses fat or glucose in your blood for energy (depends on the exercise), crunches and sit-ups develop muscle.
And don’t forget a balanced-diet. 😉
