walking instead of running for weight loss?

I find running really uncomfortable. It kills my calves, even after stretching and the best sports bras don’t seem to be able to cope! I’ve been using the treadmill at the gym, walking at 6km/hr (as well as cycling and rowing). Is this enough for weight loss? How long should I walk for? I feel like I’m not doing enough!

it all depends on how much you eat

eat less than you burn off and you will lose weight

walking uphill is good for losing weight

Yes, Those cardiovascular exercises is good for losing weight. You just need to combine it with a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. It works like magic.

You have shin splints (and I have the bra problem too) however I find the street running is alot easier. I dont get any of the problems with my calves… I figure its the stupid machine!

With regards to your bra problem try this…

Buy one of those all in 1 leotards. You need to buy 1, 1 size too small. Wear your sports bra under neath. On top of the leotard wear a tight fitting sports vest top with hidden support and then a loose t-shirt over this.

This is the only way I can run and not get black eyes!

If you continue to run on a regular basis, your calves will get used to the exercise. The activities that you are doing are enough to lose weight. Try to walk for 30-60 minutes at a time.

Walking is just fine – it just takes longer to burn the same number of calories. if you are on treadmill with no incline, then whether you are running or walking the calorie burn rate is about 25 to 35 calories per 1/4 mile roughly. If you run, you get through it faster, but if you walk the same distance, you wind up burning roughly the same calories, it just takes you longer. Maybe slightly less but not much.

If you feel pain, then don’t run. Walk. Ride bike. Take up hiking outside – most areas have trails in state parks and stuff. Go once a week and hike 5 or 10 miles. Get a trail bike and ride. Do things that are fun and make you feel like you are out playing like when you were a kid.

    hi,
walking is actually better for you. joggging is really bad for your knees. and as long as you keep it at fast walk you’ll be fine!

Good for you! Walking is very beneficial, you can cover more ground because you’re not pressured; you’re going at your own pace. Nearly every day after school I walked to the library about 1/2 mile away, and I took the stairs to every class. By making simple lifestyle changes such as, taking the stairs vs. the elevator, walking around the airport while waiting for a flight, walk to the store instead of driving, and popping healthy snacks(ie nuts, fruit, granola, etc) you’ll be sure to lose that weight!

yip I have the same problem esp. with sports bra issues!!
walking can be just as good for weight loss and fitness as running, it depends not on how fast you walk, but how effectively (ie posture, arm swing, foot alignment). I walk every weekday for at least 30 minutes, (up to 60) with friends, so its not only an opportunity for aerobic exercise, but also for a good gossip and some fresh air!! if you combine this aerobic activity with anerobic exercise (such as weight training, other toning exercises) you should be well on the way to effective weight loss and overall enhanced health.

Of course any exercise is good and the rule is to burn more calories during the day through exercise than you consume. Certainly if you eat well and often together with keeping well hydrated, good brisk walks will get you in trim. If you don’t feel that you are doing enough make your walks longer or, on every second or third day, push the pace a little harder. You need to feel slightly exhausted after each session for maximum benefit. Just stick at it, it may not appear to be doing anything for a while but you will find the weight just falling away eventually. Good luck.

Walking a mile and running a mile burn almost exactly the same amount of calories. Running uses slightly more but there’s not much in it.

Obviously if you’re running you’ll travel farther in a given amount of time, so you’ll need to walk for longer to burn the same energy as your run.

Have you tried the elliptical/skiing type machines too, similar to running, but no stress on joints? Or even swimming?

As long as you’re pushing yourself, you will be losing weight. The thing with walking is, even though it’s a good way to get into CV exercise, it’s not very strenuous. To lose weight by walking you’d need to walk distances 3-4 greater than distances you’d be jogging. If you’ve got the time then it’s ok. If you can’t walk such big distances, increase the intensity of the rowing and cycling. You said yourself, you don’t feel like you’re doing enough. That’s a very good indicator that you’re not, and you need to increase the intensity.
