Should the mental health and alternative medicine sections be merged?

harley: i don’t see any need for quackery.

it was more a case of killing two demented birds with one big stone.

Never have I read such psychotic drivel as that which is posted in the Alt Med section on yahoo answers.

Yes, but I think it’s going to take a long time for Western medicine to realize the need for alternative therapies.

I don’t think so but you’ve unwittingly raised an interesting point in the crossover between good physical health and good mental health. These two are very closely related.

If you aren’t convinced, drive a 6 inch nail through your foot and once that stops hurting pick another spot like… say the Scrotum. Then another spot and see how long it is before the pain sends you into a low…

Ask someone with depression but physiolically well how they feel. Don’t be suprised if they feel terrible.

This probably isn’t what you were getting at at all but I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents.
Perhaps you can feed back what it feels like to drive a sharp object through your scrotum?
Hey lets go the whole hog; What about a testicle?

Interesting question. After being treated for depression by a conventional health practitioner only to have the condition worsen to the point of being institutionalized, I finally discovered altmeds out of pure desperation. I really didn’t see the connection until you pointed it out. If it weren’t for altmeds, I’d still be depressed.

I’m also diabetic and was being treated by a conventional medical practitioner for that. That condition worsened as well. Due to the overwhelming success I had with altmeds treating the depression, I decided to try alternatives to help my diabetes. Voila!! No more need for medication for my diabetes.

In case you’re not getting the point, I also have fibromyalgia. My doctor wasn’t able to help me there either. So, I sought help in the form of alternatives. Today, I’m employed full time, live an active, healthy life, and am feeling better than I have in the past twenty years.

So, I’d say why stop at mental health??…. let’s merge all health concerns with alternative medicine since it’s so effective.

yes, those with mental health issues would get a lot better help here at Alt Med, as would most of the other health categories. Good idea. But, that doesn’t mean we have to wait for the merger. We alt med answerers could expand our horizons and take the cures to the world. Sorry you see it as psychotic drivel, since one day, these natural, time tested alternatives to nouveau modern medicine could be what you need to save your life.

it should just be banned. alt med kills. alt med breeds ignorance. any seller of alt med is a FRAUD, because you claim to know what you cannot possibly know. If you would like to sue me please email and I will give the details you need to do so. furthermore I will formally and publicly call you a fraud to give your case a good ground to start.

any takers. you can donate the winnings to charity.

I suppose if you consider scientific illiteracy a mental disorder, I just think they’re morons… I know, ad hominem. Not even skeptics are always immune from this fallacy. Pretty funny question Michael

I agree with sharpe on this one. Most of them are not crazy, they’re just scientifically illiterate and pumped full of misinformation. There are some serious crazy ones though. I don’t mind the vitamin, acupuncture, meditation crowd that much. The energy/crystal/obsessed with herbs/homeopathic nonsense is what kills me. It is so ridiculous that I both laugh and cry at the same time.

I wish we could do surveys on how many of them have taken a college level science course or better yet, a high school level science course! The “smart” ones try to use quantum mechanics to describe why their remedies are beyond scientific evaluation. It is clear that none of them know what wave, particle, or energy even mean. It really is a sad state of affairs.

Also, I will go so far as to say that alt med takes a great leap of faith, much in the same way that religion does. If we were to merge alt med with mental health, we might have to bring in religion as well. It is just as ridiculous in my mind to believe in a talking snake as it is to believe a piece of quartz will cure cancer.
