Is it possible to lose weight fast simply by riding my bike around my block once a day?

You had better ride the bike longer than that.

Well it depends on how large your block is but my guess is probably not.

Put it this way to lose weight you have to burn roughly 3,500 excess calories (net of what you eat) for every pound you want to lose.

For an average person…riding your bike at about 6 miles an hour (leisurely cruise) will burn about 250 calories an hour. At that rate you would have to ride about 12 hrs to lose a lb. Aggresive riding (13 miles an hour) roughly doubles the rate of burn.

So if you biked an hour a day and coupled that with a controlled and balanced diet (much more important) you will probably be able to lose some steadily but don’t count on just hopping on your bike and doing a lap a day around your neighborhood. Every bit counts though.

Here’s a good website that details how much calories are spent doing various activities:

yes, i ride my bike 2 miles a day.its very healthy for u, and probably the easiest way to lose weight.1 block a day would work but 2 blocks would work alot better.ride with freinds or something to try and make it fun.

Just think in terms of time and intensity. You want to get the heart and lungs working hard enough and long enough to break a full sweat and get breathing pretty hard for an extended period.

How you do it doesn’t matter so much for weight loss purposes, but obviously walking / cycling / running are good ways.

    Good luck

No…to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. A lap around the block burns an insignificant number of calories. To lose weight, exercise 30 minutes or more, with enough effort to make your face flush, your breathing hard, and your body sweat.

Once around the block won’t do it. To lose weight, you need to eat sensibly and ride at least an hour every day, more if you can work it in your schedule. I lost about 50 pounds a few years ago and have kept it off by riding at least 2 hours a day. I also commute by bike in the good weather and try to get out for a long ride (4-5 hours) on the weekend.
