It’s hard to say because it depends on so many different things (age, type of coverage, medical history). I can tell you this though – I am 47, single, with 2 children, have a PPO policy with a $5000 deductible, $35 office visit co-pays, and prescription drug coverage and I live in California. I pay about $180 per month to cover all three of us.

You hear alot of stories about people paying “hundreds” per month and they make it sound like that is typical but it’s usually families, or older couples, with HMO’s (which are expensive because you usually have no out of pocket expenses besides the premium).

You pay for it through taxes. We pay for it separately. It can range from $50/month to $500/month for an individual. It depends on their age, health status, where they live, etc…

It is a bit like asking how much does a car cost in the USA. It all depends, are you buying a Ford Fiesta or were you more interested in the Cadillac STS.

Same with health insurance do you want a bare bones plan that only covers you for serious injury or illness or do you want a comprehensive plan that has all of the “bells and whistles” or perhaps something in between. The cost of health insurance is directly related to the level of your participation in sharing the cost of your health care with the insurer. The more you pay for your own health care the lower your premium will be.

Very many, here in the USA, have health insurance provided by their employer with a minimal contribution by the employee.
