How fit can you get by walking instead of running?

I can walk for miles if i have to, i dont like running though. How far would i have to walk a day to have a good workout? Im not in terrible shape, quit smoking a year ago, maybe a bit of a beer belly lol.

I walk to work every morning. Takes bout 20 – 30 mins.
Try walking at quite a fast pace. You can also wear those wrist and ankles weights under your clothes too to give a bit of resistance. x

“how far” generally isn’t the best question to ask, nor is “how long”.

Your best bet would be to experiment a little unfortunately, however this should only take 2-3 sessions. See what starts to tire you out (after proper stretching, of course) and halve it so you can walk to a destination and back. Nice ‘n easy.

Calorie-burning wise, you can get just as fit, but you’ll have to walk for twice the time that you’d spend running to burn the same # of calories.

If you have a treadmill, get on it, walk at your normal pace, but crank up the incline. This actually burns MORE calories than running……….try it for a few minutes and youll see why 🙂

You can get quite fit, simply increase the pace a bit, you’ll be surprised. I’m not talking race walking, but a good pace which makes you breathe heavily. Most fitness experts say 30 minutes of exercise, (the more vigorous the better ) at least 3 times a week is the minimum, so if you can do that say 4 times a week, and mix it up, (different routes) or with other activities like walking a dog, cycling so you don’t get bored and quit, you’ll be going a long way to getting a level of fitness greater than the general average, and you’ll feel better for it.

I have been searching for this information for quite some times. About three hours of online searching, at last I found it in your blog. I wonder why Yahoo dont display this kind of good websites in the first page. Usually the top search engine results are full of rubbish. Perhaps its time to use another search engine.
