How do you prevent getting mouth ulcers?

I suffer from ulcers terribly every few months. I’m fit, heathly eat a well balanced diet, but every so often I get them and about 4 or 5 at a time in my mouth. I think it may be due to stress or lack of sleep as we have a new born, but i may be wrong. Is there any way I can prevent these. I obviously use bonjela when I get them.

Ulcers are stress related, so I’ve always thought. I should know, I get enough of them.

From your case it does sound like it is due to stress and tiredness. Some people are more likely to get mouth ulcers than others unfortunately.
It could also be because of your teeth, some might be irregular and rub against your cheek/lips.

I don’t have much advice to suggest to preventing them as it is hard but you need to try and find out what he causes of your ulcers might be and then treat them. Maybe see your doctor?

I find I get ulcers if I’m low in vitamin C for any reason (I hate pealing oranges and spuds). I therefore take a vitamin C supplement (500mg) which I find makes a difference. Although yours are down to stress, one a day may help and certainly won’t do you any harm.

Make sure you are getting plenty of vitamin c. Supplement if you feel the need.

I’ve also read that mouth ulcers can also be related to the “trauma” of vigorous brushing of your teeth. I don’t know if that is aplicable in your case.

The most common type of mouth ulcers are called ‘apthous’ ulcers. They are probably viral. (though no virus has been identified.)This means they should not be given antibiotics as there have no effect. There behaviour is similar to cold sores, in that they are recurrent, come out when we are run down and we never seem to develop immunity. Here the similarity ends, because unlike herpetic cold sores there is no treatment.

Each ulcer lasts about 10 days, but you can get further crops erupting, so each episode may last longer than that.

Ice,ice cream and cold soft items, become the easiest things to eat. Teething gels sometimes help. There are 2 prescription drugs for apthous ulcers, Corlan Pellets and Adcortyl in Orobase paste. Both are steroids, only reduce the nipping a bit and neither hastens resolution.

The best way to get rid of ulcers quicky may sound drastic but it isn’t. Take a quarter of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and put it into half a cup of warm water, and stirr well. Rinse your mouth with the liquid until you have used it all up. Try not to swallow any if you are not used to spices, although it won’t hurt you if you do. I drink this regularly as it cured my stomach ulcers. Repeat the mouthwash 3 or 4 times a day for 2 days. Ulcers gone!

Treat any you have with very hot & very salty mouth washes. Hurts like hell but will clear them up quickly. I’d suggest looking at changing to a toothpaste that doesn’t contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (foaming agent) as this has been found to be the guilty constituent behind many cases of mouth ulcers. There is a make called Hollytrees that doesn’t contain SLS & you can get this in your health food shop. I’m sure this will sort your recurrent problem out.

Stress and lack of vitamin C causes ulcers although there are other health problems that can cause them such as hidden infections.
