How Can I Prevent Strokes?

A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is limited. This can happen for several seconds and even to a few minutes. Once the brain is denied of blood that carries oxygen, it can result to the death of brain cells and subsequent brain damage. Since stroke can be very dangerous, prevention of this disease is very much a priority for many people.

But it should be highlighted that a person cannot just prevent a stroke from happening. There are some necessary surgeries which can pave increased risk of stroke, particularly for those with congenital heart ailments. In such case, the risk of stroke is far outweighed by the advantages of surgery.

Most people would emphasize prevention of stroke beginning in childhood. For instance, a child may begin to take necessary steps in the decreasing chances of stroke like consuming healthy foods and taking lots of exercise. Their diet must be low in saturated fat particularly for kids who are more than 5 years old.

As a person ages, he picks up some unhealthy habits that can contribute to the risk of stroke. For example, smoking increases one’s chances of getting a stroke. Poor diet as well as lack of exercise makes it more likely that a person gets stroke. These can also lead to various conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, both of which can contribute to increased chances of stroke.

Also, people who are obese have greater chances of getting stroke. Those who carry additional pounds must modify their diets and have at least half an hour of aerobic exercise in a day.

One of the best ways to prevent stroke is to quit smoking. Drink alcohol moderately. Those who are obese should also get annual checkups so that their blood pressure levels are always checked.
