How can I motivate my 21 year old daughter to lose weight?

My daughter has put on a lot of weight recently and I want to help her, not humiliate her or nag her, to lose weight. She doesn’t live with me, she lives about an hour away. What can I do?

Nothing. The only thing that will motivate her to lose weight is when she realizes that she needs to lose weight. Otherwise, all you can do is mention it, or nag all the time.

I would try and tell her nicely to go to the doctor to make sure that everything is ok. I am 24 and last year gained about 10 pounds and 5 more this year from having a thyroid problem. I am now on medicine to help but thats what happened to me.

That is very difficult. I would bring it up once and let her know you care about her happiness and would like to offer her support. If after the one-time conversation about it, she doesn’t do anything, I’m afraid it’s up to her to find her own way. Usually weight gain has to do with emotions. I find when I am unhappy, I gain weight.

You have to come up with some type of a reward system, this will help keep you motivated. One of the best things to do is make a contingency contract. Stating what you want to do, who will help you do it, and what do you get for doing it.

Then also try to find a well balance diet program. My friend did this one diet program where the average weight lose is 7 pounds in 9 days. It might be the thing you are looking for, I know it’s well balanced. If you want e-mail me and I can tell you more about either of these.
