How can i get my GP to prescribe me some slimming pills?

Am sadly about 4 stone overweight and am going to the gym two or three times a week but the bulge is not shifting! Was hoping that my gp could give me some of those pills that stop you absorbing fat. On what grounds could she give me them?
would like to verify that i am not sitting on my bum eating donuts at the gym! and i also have a reasonably active job where i walk at least 20,000 steps a day! Was just wondering why the weight wasnt going and if my gp would help give me a little kick start but thanks all for the advice.

My GP prescribed xenical for me which stops fat being absorbed. She should do the same for you. They do work but you get no warning of the impending motion. I don’t think any GP will prescribe other diet pills like phentermine because they are harmful and don’t work- because one always puts back whatever weight is lost. My Gp wouldn’t give me any.

I very much doubt your GP will give you any slimming pills. But there are doctors who will, you just need to find them. Basically the slimming pills they give out – cost about £20, are based on a “speed” like drug, which curbs your appetite, but have quite a few bad side effects. Would recommend you just carry on at the gym and restrict your diet. You just have to be patient and then suddenly you will see the results.

I also tried about 1 year ago for my gp to prescribe me pills but he said i didn`t meet the criteria,i wasn`t overweight enough! My friend got prescribed reductil and she has lost alot of weight,i think it was because she said she was very depressed about her weight.

I really don’t think there’s any pills that just absorb fat. I think they only exist in the land of Oz.

Most of the diet pills are controlled substances and doctors may be reluctant to Rx them because of liability to abuse.

Try the over the counter variety diet pills. And, try doing what you can to cut down on calories. Plus, anything at all for exercise. That means if you go to a car park, don’t try to get as close to the store but walk a few extra feet.

The side effects of these pills are horrible, and your gp will probably tell you you are not overweight enough. you have to have tried loads of diets with no sucess and be really depressed about you weight for a doctor to consider giving you these pills, so unfortunately you will have to do it the hard way.

Try wearing a mask and catching him in a dark alley, he may not be at all keen to prescribe them at the surgery!!!

I have to admit I have a ‘stock’ answer for this question, since if you look it appears 20-30 times every day!!!

Type ‘guaranteed weight loss’ into google, you will find 1 1/2 million sites!

Look around you if ANY of these things worked would we be getting so overweight?

We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don’t do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don’t use them up!

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg.

Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?

I have seen hundreds of questions with this same pattern :- I am fat, tell me where on line I can get this super diet or herbal/dangerous/illegal drug that I hear will fix it for me in 10 minutes without the need for me to get off the couch!

No fixes pal , less in more out, its the only way.

The tablet you are talking about is Orlistat/Xenical.

I was prescribed them a few years ago but not without a struggle. It just depends on which doctor you see. I got them relatively easy the first time (but to meet the criteria I think you have to lose about 6lb on your own first), but when I went to see another doctor a few months ago she wouldnt give them to me and said that new studies say they actually only help patients lose about 5lb.

They do work, but I think its because they sort of force you to eat healthy because when you eat your normal food or anything fatty, you get really oily poo and cant help farting and it stains your pants orange! (Sorry but thought I better give you the whole picture)

Your GP is right not to give you pills. There is nothing that will make you lose weight except eating healthily and exercising.

If you are going to the gym as you say, are you working out properly? If you are one of these people that go to the gym, spend most of the time yakking, get on a treadmill and walk very slowly whilst yakking , then get on the rower and do 2 mins of meagre effort, then pick up some very light weights and lift them half hearted for three or four reps, then that is why the weight isn’t shifting.

Get a personalised program from one of the trainers at the gym. Get a dietitian referral from your GP for diet advice. Put a photo of you in swimming costume on the fridge. Enter a 5k race in 3 or 4 months time so you have a target and motivation. This will work wonders.

The only think that makes you lose weight is eat less and move more. There is nothing else.

You need to tell your GP that you’ve exausted every other method and nothings working. Cry if you have to. Tell him your getting depressed about it and he should give them to you
