How can I avoid cracked heels ?

Cracked heels is one of the most common problems both men and women face. Usually caused by dry skin, cracked heels often occurs to people who are overweight, wear open-heeled shoes and those who stand for a prolonged period or those who are always barefooted. While this may seem a natural thing to people, cracked heels could lead to serious problems like ulcers and infections, so preventing your heels to crack is an important thing.

To promote healthy heels, make sure you use a good oil-based moisturizing cream that you can use two or more times a day for both heels for extra hydration. If your heels are dry, you can use a pumice stone or foot file in reducing thickened skin or calluses.

Seal salt scrubs work best in preventing dry skin and moisturizing feet. Choose an oil-based salt scrub and pamper your heels with a foot scrub at least once a month. If the problem persists, go to a podiatrist to get proper treatment. A podiatrist can also provide a professional advice on which shoes to buy that can support your heels more appropriately.

If you love to go barefoot, make sure to wear shoes and socks whenever you’re out and about on hard surfaces like tile, concrete and wood floors. Wear shoes with a good heel support. Insoles can also be used to give extra support.

Not everyone may know this, but getting a pedicure regularly would help in avoiding cracked heels. For individuals with a family history of diabetes, pedicures can help reduce the risk of infection.
