do doctors prescribe morphine in medicine form to be taken at home?
I thought you could only get morphine as a patient when you were in hospital, but a friend said you can get it in medicine form and take it at home. This has turned into a bet! Thanks in advance for any help…

You definitely cannot take morphine home with you. There are several milder versions that you can get prescribed but you cannot get morphine itself.

You sure can. Its usually very small doses as to avoid addiction (like someone was talking about before) and usually only given in extreme cases where the regular prescription narcotics are not enough.

You can buy Kaolin and Morphine over the counter at the Chemist’s shop for diarrhoea. Not a hell of a lot of Morphine in it though (0.01% Morphine).

Yes you can, but it is highly controlled. When my mum had cancer and was being cared for at home she had a morphine drip which she could control by pressing a button (obviously only a small amount at a time could be administered).
Tramadol isn’t the same as morphine – it’s an artificial opiate like pain killer which is taken in tablet form by millions of people – my Mother in Law takes it for back pain.
I remember being able to buy Kaolin and Morphine mixture at the chemist for diarrhoea – only 20 or 25 years ago. the Morphine used to separate out on top in the bottle and I saw a little old lady being refused a bottle because she’d bought 2 already that week!

Doctors are hesitant to prescribe this form of morphine unless you are considered terminal or have intractable pain. It is highly addictive.

MoSO4 ( Morphine Sulfate) is available in forms of tablets , liquid and injection. It can also come in a skin patch for a steady slow release.
Long-acting morphine and morphine immediate-release come in many tablet sizes. There is also a short-acting liquid form. There is no usual dose. Pain and medication needs vary from one person to another. The dose you take will be prescribed, and later raised or lowered, according to your specific pain needs
Morphine is an opioid analgesic; that is used to relieve severe pain, including pain related to cancer. The latter is the instance where Morphine is most often used. This is the drug of choice for cancer patients as narcotic pain relievers.
Common side effects are constipation, sedation or sleepiness, mental changes; nausea and itching.
Precautions:
Morphine may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Morphine should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.
Do not drink alcohol while you are using morphine. Dangerous side effects or death can occur when alcohol is combined with morphine. Check your food and medicine labels to be sure these products do not contain alcohol.
Never take more than your prescribed dose of morphine. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.
Do not stop taking morphine suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medication

Not much of a subject to bet on. However morphine, heroin, (diamorphine) and other opiate analogues are prescribes for both terminal care and sometimes other severe pain issues for home use. The prescriptions until recently had to be completely hand written in a particular way for security reasons, however about 18 months ago the rules changed and computer prescriptions are now valid. ( In fact these are probably more secure and less susceptible to tampering.)
May I suggest whoever wins donates the proceeds to a cancer charity?

Yes they can but often only ER docs will do so. Must have severe pain. I fractured several ribs and after a morphine drip the ER doctors gave me 15mg tabs for home…but then family doc gave me other codine based pills. Some MD’S ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PRESCRIBE MORPHINE—depends on the class of narcotic.
