Can stopping smoking cold turkey while pregnant harm the baby?

My sister was pregnant recently and claimed that she did not want to stop smoking instantly because her doctor told her if she did it could do harm to the developing baby. Is this true? It sounds like bull to me. She reduced her cigarettes but never quit even by the time that the baby was born.

Not only is going cold turkey safe, it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby while you’re pregnant. As soon as you stop smoking, your baby will start getting more oxygen, and the risk of miscarriage, premature labour, and other complications will fall.

Giving up by going cold turkey can be difficult, especially if you’re a heavy smoker. As your body adjusts to life without nicotine, you’ll probably feel restless and irritable. The good news is that your baby won’t share in the misery. There’s no evidence that babies go through nicotine withdrawal, and they certainly won’t miss a daily dose of tar and carbon monoxide. Besides, your withdrawal symptoms will fade in two or three weeks, and then you can finally stop thinking about cigarettes and start thinking about getting the baby’s room ready.

No, and that so-called Doctor is a quack.

If you love your baby, then stop. The only harm (potentially) comes from nicotine going into its system as it is trying to form its organs. They are not fully developed and you are interfering in that by what you consume.

There are decades of studies pointing to the fact that smoking CAN harm your unborn child.

Its your choice at the end of the day, and not the baby’s. The baby has no say in this and is 100% dependant on you for everything.

Good luck an dbest wishes in making the right decision for your baby and you.

Quitting cold turkey is probably the best thing. You should even smoke if you think you are going to become pregnant.
